Part 4: Interviews

QV: Can you tell me a bit about the competency test?

Sharon: Competency test is basically asking questions about somebody's experience and letting them describe their experience and answer a series of questions for example: What is your policy about customer services? So the candidate will explain, I think blah blah blah, and then you would ask:  But how would you go about it actually, uh, implementing whatever you think the policy is into your business or into your department or into your services or into your job for example.

And I find that questions like this are very very revealing. Especially if you have a whole series of them, and when you have a number of candidate and you can actually see the difference of opinions and that is, I think, very very accurate. I like to use competency tests, actually.

QV:  When you are carrying out interviews, what particular questions do you always ask your job seeker?

Sharon: Personally, I would always ask what  they think are  the strongest characteristics of the candidate. What do you think your weak points are and what do you think your strongest points are for example.

QV: What are you looking for in the answer?

Sharon: Honesty, more than anything else, and also something that will give me an idea of who I'm going to be dealing with.
