Sponsorship
Currently almost all employees in Qatar require sponsorship. Employees are not allowed to work for anyone other than their sponsor even on a part-time basis. In practice this rule is often broken, although doing so is sufficient grounds for cancelling a work permit.
Employees cannot normally transfer sponsorship unless they have worked for their employer for two years. They will also need a clearance letter from their sponsor in order to do so. A sponsor can ban a departing employee from returning to the country for two years.
Sponsors do not have the right to keep the passports of their employees except to perform official business, unless it has been agreed in writing between both employee and employer.
Employees who are sponsored can in turn sponsor their own families. Fathers can sponsor their sons as long as they are under the age of 25 and are students, and can sponsor their daughters until they marry.
Workers can not leave the country without an exit permit, although minors and wives may do so.
After a residence permit is cancelled, an employee can not return to the country for two years, even as a tourist.
Women
Women seeking work in Qatar who are on a family sponsorship do not need a separate work permit. However, they must register as a working woman at the Labour Department. To do so they must have to have the permission of their sponsor (in the form of a signed letter). While women are entitled to the same pay, training and promotion prospects, they are not allowed to undertake hazardous work. After a year’s employment women are entitled to 50 days paid maternity leave. A women may not be dismissed because of marriage.
According to the sponsorship law issued in 2009 women can sponsor both husbands and children.
For more information see: Working Women in Qatar
Contracts
Employment contracts must be drawn up in Arabic. While a contract may be translated into another language, where there is a dispute over translation the Arabic version will always prevail.
One copy of the contract must be given to the employee and one to the employer, while a further copy is kept at the ministry of Labour.
Dismissal and Resignation
During the probation period of a job – which can last up to six months – an employee can fired with three days notice. Otherwise either the employer or the employee can terminate a contract without giving reason; the period of time required varies depending on the length of service and how the employee is paid, but can be anything from a week to two months.
Disputes
Disputes between companies and workers can be referred to the labour department. If the labour department cannot resolve the problem it will be referred first to a reconciliation committee and the to an arbitration committee. In the event of being dismissed an employee may be able to appeal to the lab our department, but must do so within seven days of receiving his or her dismissal.

Working Hours
48 hours is the maximum amount of time a employee may be required to work under Qatar labour law without the payment of overtime. Normal working hours consist of eight hours a day, six days a week. However, during Ramadan these hours should be reduced to 6 hours a day with a maximum of 36 hours a week. Working hours should include at least an hour for rest, eating and prayer. Even with overtime, employees should not work more than ten hours a day.
Part Time Work
Until recently employees were not allowed to take on additional work outside their primary job. This has now changed, and workers can now take on additional part time work if they have the permission of the sponsor.
Holidays
Employees are entitled to a minimum of two weeks leave a year. Expatriate employees must be provided with an air ticket at the end of their contract. Friday is a designated holiday, and a worker should never be required to work more two consecutive Fridays. Workers are also entitled to leave with full pay on Eid Il Fitri, Eid AlAdha, Independence day and three other non-specified days. Muslims are allowed two weeks of unpaid leave to perform the pilgrimage.
Sickness
Workers are entitled to two weeks sick leave on full pay and half pay for another four weeks, after which they are not entitled to any further pay. After 12 weeks of sick leave the employee can be dismissed.
Labour Unions
Labour unions are only allowed for Qatari employers.

Good day! I don’t have enough courage to reveal to you my real identity for I am afraid to be kicked off from the company I am working. I have many mouths to feed and plans to realize. I read some lines from the labor law and I found out some violations of my company based from it. One of this some is the working hours. I had signed a contract of 8 hour working basis per day and beyond from it must be paid but since from the start upto present we are receiving a fixed salary. Everyday we are working 10 hours and 2 half Fridays a month and even in special holidays. There's no problem for us if we will be working even every Friday as long as we are paid. At this time, we are afraid to make any absent in Friday because our project will be finished this year and they will be starting to demobilize their people by next month. Maybe they will make this as a ground of kicking us out from the company. This is just one of the SOME problems we have. Will you please examine our company, GAMA Qatar?
Hoping to keep any ways of revealing my identity.
Thank you.

I am an engineer and worked with a company in Qatar until I completed the project for about one year. I was demobilized on December 27 2009 after the completion of the project. I asked for NOC from my employer but they refused to send it to me. Does the employer have the right in withholding my NOC?

Dear Sir/Madam
I’m Nepalese. I’m working at Qatar.
At Nepal I got the job offer letter mention about the receptionist, 1,500Qrs. Basic of salary and 200 Qrs. Food allowance including overtime I suppose to get 2,500 Qrs. And according to me Basic salary means 8hrs of work. I used to work 12hrs at hotel. But I couldn’t get my overtime, I mean 4hrs of works this I mentions each month to my boss. And in my receipts I used to get basic salary of 750Qrs and other 4hrs overtimes in total I used to get 1,700Qrs. After 8 month because of business crises Hotel was sold to another Owner, Though 3 of us lost our job. Afterwards our boss let me Sign on another contract and they give me two choice go back to Nepal or work as security. But I asked for Non objection letter (NOC) from the company because I was paying Loan which I took at Nepal and still I’m paying. But my company did not give me NOC letter so that I don’t have a choice and I did the sign into new contract. Now I’m working as a security because they told me that they don’t have a job for me. And my company is paying me 1,400 Qrs. In total. From then each and month I’m asking for NOC letter but I don’t have any replies. I don’t want to work as security and it is not my profession too. Only matter is that I must pay my loans. Because of this I lost my time, experience and my wages. I wants NOC letter so that I can work for other company. Is there any chance that I can get NOC Letter from the company and I can work freely? Does Qatar Law give me chance to live and work at Here in Qatar? Is there any chance that Qatar Labor court provides me NOC Letter?
You’re Scenery

At first the payroll was being done by the sponor company until the contractor saw how much it was paying us. After that they quit letting them do the payroll and did it themselves, which in turn is much less. I than had to sign a new contract which there was never an Arabic version nor do I have a copy. Also, I am not getting paid correctly according to Article 66,73,74,75, and 78. Could you please advise me on what I can and can't do and need to do. Thanks

Qatar Laws are very good and good clarity is there. But one more thing is required that there is no clause or statement regarding emergency holidays. Here more are expatriates, if anything goes wrong in their home country/parents /family the employee has to rush his hoem time but many companies are not giving any EMERGENCY OR SPECIAL LEAVE, whcih needs to made asa a Mandatory requirement but without any expense to the emmployer, under humanitarian ground.

Cancelling a visa - Is it possible?

Hi Friends,
I have been reading the notings in this website for quite sometime. I was due to arrive Doha by this week, but it has got postponed.
What happened is like this: I had agreed to join a company there & they have prepared my work visa. Just after that I got another offer from another company in Doha for a much bigger amount. I wanted to take the 2nd offer & have requested the 1st company to cancel my visa. They have reluctantly agreed but I will have to reimburse their expenses.
Can someone who is aware about local laws & visa regulations, may advise me whether it is possible to cancel my visa by the 1st company & then the 2nd one applies for it afresh? Or is there a waiting period in between? I have not yet traveled to Qatar & my passport has not been stamped consequently.
I will be thankful for some serious advice from any well informed person.

I've been working in this government firm, 3years contract and I got new contract for 1 year. My question, was that I was asked to get my husband certificate of what are the benefit he is getting from his sponsor (company), for example yearly ticket as well as the Private Insurance health card.
My husband is working not in Government firm, I will do understand if my husband is working in government, I don't have complain if I dont get this benefit.
Another things, I been hearing that what ever the wags getting of the employed husband, wife will get too. like where I am working, I am getting only my basic salary + transportation.
Please, I would like to verify all the above mentioned if its all legal.
Thanking for advance.

I've been working here in Qatar for more than a year,my concern is, is the Qatar Labor Law mandates all companies to cover thier employees with the accident and a health insurance?please let me set an example. From the company accommodation to the work place, company provides the transportation for it's employees. So happened that the car being then used was a van with three(3) seating capacity only and it caries five(5) persons on board when it encountered an accident.Do the two(2)other passengers can be covered by the insurance?

I have worked in Doha for three years now as a teacher. My contract is a yearly contract. If I choose to resign and ask my sponsor for a release and a No Objection Letter (to work in another organization)-can my sponsor decline because he/she feels like it. OR is there something in the law that protects me and garantees that as long as I haven't signed a new contract, and give my employers a month's notice, that they MUST grant me my release without beating around the bush and also grant me a no objection letter. I am worried that the decisions they make behind my back are personal and manufactured. Waiting for a reply. Worried and desperate!

I finished my one year contract and my employer did not renew my contract for another year. My question is can my company give me NOC since they are the one who no longer needs my services which i asked from them and they told me that they will not give me NOC. So this means we will stop eating because we are not givin a chance to look for another job.
This is whar I want to know because I will be living this 14th of April for home. Thanks..

I have been working on this MEP company, and we are working 9 1/2 hours a day, though we are paid for an overtime which is only 280 riyals FIXED OT everymonth.. for an equivalent of 62 hours /month on Overtime. Does this complies with the Labor Law? and we are also required to work 2 fridays everymonth for 3 hours to compensate the 1/2 hours everyday on OT since we only work 9 1/2 hours.

Regarding hours of work stated in the labor code .. During Ramadan we are obliged to work from 9am to 3pm straight and go back and start 7:30pm to 11:00pm in the evening.. after two weeks during the Ramadan ... the schedule changed and starts 7:00am to 3:00pm and return after break 7:00pm up to 12:00am ... and we did not receive any overtime pay during this period ... It is very obvious that we are working over time and according to labor law of Qatar, employees are allowed to work only 6 hours a day during Ramadan.. and for ordinary days our company is still making us go to work for 12 hours ... is there any thing we can do to stop this abuse??? Thanks…

I want to change company.I've been working with the company for almost 2 years now.Is it possible that my current company will give me release?
Comment by Admin, 16th October, 2008
You can ask for an NOC but you won't necessarily get it. If you have been working for two years for a company and you have a NOC you can change jobs, otherwise you usually can't.

It is certainly treated like a right - i.e. Employers hand it out if they feel like it.
