Is there Freedom of Press and Speech in Qatar?

Arab countries have a reputation for restricting freedom of press, speech and expression, and for suppressing civil society. But one Arab country which has broken out of the mould is Qatar.

While there is still censorship of foreign magazines and books, Qatar is the only Arab state to have no Ministry of Information. The satellite channel Al Jazeera, established and based in Qatar, and the BBC World show the Doha Debates, hosted in Doha, are two examples showing how Qatar is taking the lead in providing its people with freedom of press and speech.
