Arab men in a Qatar souq wearing Thobes.
Men wearing Thobes.

Description

A long white dress, usually made from cotton. The term thobe today is usually used to refer to the man's dress, which flows from the shoulders to the ankles (exact length may vary.) In Qatar a darker heavier dress made of wool may be worn in its place during the colder winter months.

National Dress

In Qatar the thobe is worn with pride, and may be required in schools and in some places of work. Many Qataris do not exclusively wear the thobe, and may change into Western attire depending on who they are meeting or what they are doing. Some foreigners are hesitant to wear the thobe in case they cause disrespect. Qataris are not usually offended by this, and may find it a source of amusement.

The wearing of National Dress in Qatar may affect the treatment as person receives. Qataris have reported getting better service but having to pay higher prices when wearing the thobe.

Religious Significance

The Thobe, with its loose concealing folds, enables men to follow Mohammed's injunction to be modest and to conceal the Awrah, the area between his navel and his knee.

I think that the thobe is comfortable and it is the ideal dress for the hot desert climate, I also think that non Qataris should wear it as well.
